The objective of this article is to evaluate European Union’s (EU) policy towards Cyprus issue. This paper argues the EU has failed to play a decisive role in conflict resolution in Cyprus throughout the Europeanization process. This is because, the EU’s policy towards Cyprus has lacked a balanced and uniform policy instruments applicable for both Turkish and Greek Cypriots. A more effective and balanced policy approach of the EU would have been more likely to yield a political settlement in Cyprus The second contention of this paper is that an alternative policy of the EU, to locate Turkish accession negotiations within a more flexible and positive framework of Cyprus question and to have offered a degree of clarity and certainty about Turkish prospects for membership, might have been more effective in influencing Turkey to settle Cyprus issue. By the same token, the viability and rationality of an effective policy of the EU towards Cyprus needs to be more thoroughly considered than was hitherto the case.
